Titonton, borned (Joseph Thony Moise) in Haiti in June 18, 1933. His father was called Thony and his Mother Palmira. He came to the United States in 1973. He lived in New York up to 1980, then moved to New Jersey where he died.
Joseph Thony Moise started working as an artist in 1952 at the age of 19. He studied at “Centre d’Art” in the city of Port-au-Prince. He continued with his education at “Foyer Des Arts Plastiques” with a group of friends. He mostly used oil and water-based paints. Titonton was also a singer. Between 1954 and 1956, he sang in the group “Michel Desgrottes”. In 1960, he worked as a theater designer for the group “Jeune Culture”.
Between 1969 and 1971, he taught at the “Conservatoire National D’Haiti”. Totonton worked as a radio host where he promoted the Creole Language. He hosted a show in “Radio Haiti Inter” in Haiti, in “Radio Haiti International” in New Jersey, and in “Radio Soleil d’haiti” in New York.
When he came to the United States in 1973, he continued his activities in front of another audience. He participated in many expositions such as: the 1973 “Ekspozisyon penti Afro-Ayisyen” at the Susuki Galery in New Jersey; May 1975, “Madison Square Garden Art Festival”; 1984 “World Trade Center” New York; 1989 “Meri East Orange, New Jersey; 1991 “Rutgers University” New Jersey.
Joseph thony Moise (Titonton) received many medals of honor for his artistic works. In 1975, the Haitian community in New York proclaimed Titonton : “The most popular Artist, comedian, and Painter”
He created a famous painting: “Dechoukay” which gained the attention of Haitians and foreigners alike. In September 2010, Titonton and a group of painters founded an organization called “Ayitistik”.
